Good Old Hiplife Days To Be Relived At "Back In The Days" Concert

There can be no ‘Sarkodie’ without ‘Obrafour’, there can be no ‘Eazzy’s Wengezze’ without ‘Abrewa Nana’s Odo Fila Fila’, there can be no group as ‘4x4’ without ‘Buk Bak’, there can be no ‘now’ without ‘was’, there can be no ‘present’ without ‘past’, there can be no ‘today’ without ‘yesterday’, simple!

Back in the days when the baggy jeans, durags, hefty chains, combat shoes and the pinpinnis and otophistas were on the move; who would forget so easily the days when inter-school competitions where the toast of the day, at least if not for anything but to listen and see your favorite ‘kill it’ as it was said then on the beat.

Back in the days when the groove was smoother, tighter and fun, those were the days every Tom, Dick and Harry wanted to represent his or her school and prove to the next person that “charleeeey I know those lines of T-Blaze’s ‘wosisi ye wo ya’ better than you do”.

Back in the days when the DJ hits ‘Sika Baa’ by Lord Kenya, one could not help but nod the head until it nearly falls off the body. When you hear ‘Davi mede kuku’, then you smile at the language and make a thumb up sign at Ex Doe. When you attend any Sallah festival and don’t hear ‘Rana Sallah ka ka yi ko’ by VIP then with the Ox-Bone plus Friction, then that wasn’t the place to be. The list is just so endless.

Back in the days when there was this HIV/AIDS abstinence advert on the television featuring the All Stars then; when you see Obrafour and Tic Tac come in their white shirts to dance their azan crib walk dance promoting one foam company, advert be what? Being the first to learn the lyrics was always paramount because we loved our stars.

Back in the days and I mean in the late 90s and early 2000s, when Bop TV was watched by everyone in Ghana, a beautiful year when the yoo-yoo was getting deep into our main brain. This was when the rapid change in the Hip Life community was emanating, and then the music selection shifted to local hits like Sweetie Sweetie, Maka Maka, Yaanom, Komi Ke Kena, Feeling No Ye Deep, Philomena Kpitinge, Kokooko etc.

Back in the days when the most populous places where you can get to see and feel these ‘old soldiers’ were the Pool sides, Children’s Parks, National Theatres, Inter-schools (perhaps there were other places which I didn’t know of or mention here). Those were the days everything seemed pure and crooned fresh from the pot.

Years and decades perhaps later, with the initiative like this, we cannot but doff our hats to the organizers for evoking what now stands as a true purification of what has ushered the ‘new born babies’ into the limelight today. With no disrespect, I am going to implore the organizers to invite all the ‘new born babies’ to come, sit, appreciate and applaud to every tune that made the word HIP LIFE in every sense a household name today.

The event is a purely Ghanaian musical concert meant to showcase the story of our popular musicians. Come the 21st of September, 2012, at 7pm, the Accra International Conference Centre (Dome) will take an ambience depicting that of the 90s era complete, dress codes will be reenacted for patrons.

‘Lazy’ of VIP Changes His Name to ‘Zeal’

VIP Member Lazy, a popular member of award-winning music group VIP, has announced he is changing his showbiz name to Zeal, years after using the name Lazy.

He said the change of name was necessary because there was nothing wrong with a person changing his/her name, adding that he also wanted a new identity.

This is not the first time an artiste is changing his name. In the United State of America, one superstar who made the headlines with change of name is P. Diddy.

Born Sean Combs, he has used names likes Puff Daddy, P. Diddy, Diddy and King Combs Moniker. In 2011, reports said his latest name was ‘Swag.’ In Ghana, the most recent artiste who changed his name is Abortion of 4×4. He is now called Coded.

Lazy’s challenge will be how to get fans to accept the new name in a short period. Zeal is born Abdul Hamid Ibrahim. He is a key member of VIP (Vision In Progress). The other members are Promzy (Emmanuel Promzy Ababio) and Prodigal (Joseph Nana Ofori). The group released its first album in 1998 titled, ‘Bibi Baa O’. Since then, it has become the most popular Hip life group in Ghana.

In 2000, it released its second album, ‘Ye De Aba’ which was very successful. In 2001, it released ‘Lumbe Lumbe Lumbe’ with the smashing hit ‘Daben Na Odo Beba’. The group took its career to the next level with its 2003 album ‘Ahomka Womu’. The ‘Ahomka Womu’ title track topped Ghanaian charts for over 20 weeks. VIP won five awards at the Ghana Music Awards with the album and the group gained international exposure after this success. Since then, the group has toured the world.

Currently, the group’s new singles ‘Follow Me’, ‘Which Kind Yawa Be Dis’ and ‘Pampanaa’, off its new ‘7/11’ album, are enjoying massive airplay. The album itself is out in various music outlets.

Number Of Users Who Actually Enjoy Facebook Down To 4

WASHINGTON—A comprehensive and groundbreaking new report released Monday by the Pew Research Center’s Internet and American Life Project has found that only four users of Facebook derive pleasure of any kind from the popular social networking website.

According to the report, the remainder of the 950 million people registered with Facebook, despite using the site on a regular basis, take no joy in doing so, and in fact feel a profound sense of hopelessness and despair immediately upon logging in.
“An exhaustive analysis of our data indicates that Facebook does indeed have a positive impact on the day-to-day lives of Susannah Brambrink of Milwaukee, Tom Peros of San Diego, Eugene Phipps of Albuquerque, and Karen Fairbanks of rural Missouri,” lead researcher John Elliott said. “But all other users—literally all of them—are overpowered by a deep, nameless sadness when exposed to the site, and apparently only visit it out of some sick, inexplicable compulsion bordering on masochism.”
Added Elliott, “As it turns out, the vast majority of human beings tend to become depressed when they see the past five years of their life summarized right there in front of them in a sad little timeline.”

Indeed, the Pew report found that 99 percent of Facebook members could not recall having enjoyed any of the social network’s features at any time since 2009. Of that subset, 74 percent said they had asked themselves “How has my life come to this?” while checking the website multiple times per day, 67 percent said they were “inevitably plunged into an alternating cycle of vanity and self-disgust” when reviewing tagged pictures of themselves, and 52 percent said they had questioned the whole point of life itself after spending half an hour on the site only to realize the most interesting thing they had seen the entire time was a photo of what someone had for dinner.
In addition, more than three-quarters of users said they had “legitimately considered suicide” while watching politically charged arguments unfold in response to a Facebook post.

Reached for comment, two of the four people still able to spend time on Facebook without immediately calculating how much of their life they just let slip away spoke to reporters about their use of the site.
“Anytime I get a free moment, the first thing I do is check Facebook on my phone,” said Susannah Brambrink, 28, one of the last users on the face of the earth who can routinely update her profile without fearing that the smallest details of her personal life will be relentlessly mocked and ridiculed. “It’s just a fun way to stay in touch with friends and family, so I usually check it once or twice a day, if not more.”
“Sometimes I’ll be on there for an hour or more, just browsing people’s profiles,” continued Brambrink, who, unlike the other 214 million single women surveyed, said she was unconcerned by the possibility of finding out her ex-boyfriend was in a new relationship and having her heart ripped out of her chest all over again. “It’s cool to go back and see what somebody posted a year ago.”
Tom Peros, another of the four users for whom Facebook is not a constant source of anxiety fueled by narcissism and self-doubt, expressed a similar sentiment, saying it “just feels good” to read people’s status updates, a feature on the site that shows users how many things in life they’re missing out on and how many experiences they’re likely never to have.

Sources confirmed Peros is also able to explore his friends’ Facebook profiles without growing completely despondent in the face of information that documents exactly how people who were once close can drift further and further apart until they barely recognize each other and the only thing still uniting them is the superficial thread of social media.
“I love finding old classmates and seeing what they’re up to,” said Peros, who regularly skims the “Work and Education” section of profiles without reaching the soul-crushing conclusion that his own accomplishments are pathetic by comparison. “And if I’m not friends with them already, I’ll send them a request. I figure, what’s to lose? Even if you’re rejected, it’s presumably just because they don’t remember you, or else like to keep their friend list limited to people they know really well. Why else would they reject you? Right?”
At press time, the number of users who enjoy Facebook had reportedly dropped to three.

Heroes Win Malta Guinness Street Dance Season Five (5)

Heroes Dance Crew will be Ghana’s rep at the International Dance Organization (IDO) World Hip Hop Championships in Germany. This was made known after the dance crew won the 5th edition of the Malta Guinness Street Dance last Friday September 14, 2012.

Heroes emerged winners after judges scoring and Facebook fan page votes and beating their opponents; Pipeline, One Spirit and Rockers of all time to take home the cash price of GHc 15000 and the once in a lifetime opportunity to dance on the world stage

An initiative by Malta which has over the years and seasons given a platform for young, energetic and talented guys and girls to showcase their exciting dance skills. The competition takes dance crews through weeks of vigorous training and grooming to assist them become professionals and effectively build a lucrative career in dance.

The grand finale of the season held at the National Theatre in Accra opened with exhilarating dance choreography by all four competing dance crews. This served, as a teaser of the night will be.

The judges made grand entrances with KOD doing the moonwalk to Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Followed by Miss Bee who was dressed in black dancing. Judge Reggie Rockstone the final Judge did some spell bound dance moves that left the audience hungry for more after he had left the stage.

The four dance crews were tasked to be “futuristic – how dance will be in the future” saw Pipeline dressed in workmen garb laying pipes had some good stunts and dance moves but did not awe the audience or the three judges.

Heroes dance crew, appeared on stage in Ninja attires projected some awesome kung-Fu moves into their dance routine that had both the audience and the Judges impressed with their creativity and energy.

Rockers of all time thrilled the audience with their performance of blind people dancing in a group. They came on stage holding black and white canes pretending to be blind men dancing. Judges commended them for having a wild imagination for the future.

One Spirit futuristic dance was incorporated with neon lights in their costume that came on as they dance. It was an exciting performance although they wardrobe malfunction later in the performance.

The last task was the personal dance routine by all four-dance crews. This time Pipeline and Rockers were a little more impressive but they could hold a candle to Heroes and One spirit, who both did jaw dropping stunts and dance moves. After the last performance by One Spirit, everyone thought they had won the competition but turned out to be a night for Heroes Dance crew.

The grand finale also saw performances by hip life giants VIP, EL and Guru and with his Lapaz Toyota song had the audience dancing. Ayekoo to Heroes, hope they go far in the world championship and show the world Ghana’s famous azonto moves.

Legendary Amakye Dede rises to a 'seeeerious' occasion

It was a night etched in history on any level in Ghana. A night where music distributed its excellence into the veins of the hundreds who could not afford to miss out on a once-in-a-lifetime show fit for the gods.

It was a night to honour excellence. Excellence that took bold steps about four decades ago for a man known in real life as Daniel Amakye Dede.

Widely known as the Iron Boy, Amakye Dede’s illustrious music career was born in 1973 when he joined the Kumapim Royals as a composer and vocalist.

On Saturday, September 15, at the Accra International Conference Centre, he was the centre of attraction for some of the country’s big wigs including, former President John Agyekum Kufuor, former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer, Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo, Politician P.V. Obeng, Legendary boxer Prof Azumah Nelson, Prof Agyemang Badu Akosa, and other avid music fans.

The concert, the second in the series of the Legacy and Legacy Ball (LAL) to celebrate music legends, opened with a uniquely improvised piano and voice rendition of Ghana's national anthem by female singer, Alexandra Aboagye who had a male dancer, Nii Yartey Jnr hoisting the national flag behind her.

After that classic opener and warm-up, five male and female dancers gave patrons a breathtaking masterpiece of choreography that gave hints of what they should expect. It was followed by the first main act for the night, saxophonist, Steve Bedi, who played Akokɔ Bebondo, and Debi Debi ɛbeye yie.

Okyeame Kwame, the Rap Doctor brought a hip twist to the show; he thrilled the audience with Kobabi and followed it with some beat boxing which saw two female dancers join him on stage as people danced to antics. He performed Adikrom Nsuo to finish his act.

Musician and Big Brother Africa StarGame housemate, Eazzy got the audience waving their white handkerchiefs as she waved hers and sang Begye me Handkerchief with a slight disco beat to it. She then followed it with Yenfa odu Mbom.

Producer and engineer Nacy, after a brief talk about electoral peace got the audience screaming, jumping, dancing, and singing along to his rendition of Awere Kyekyere. His second, So Fre Wo Nyame was no different as received rave response from the audience.

There were also equally impressive performances from legendary Dasebre Gyamena, dancehall artiste, Samini, actress Nana Ama McBrown, Kwabena Kwabena and Becca. None of them failed in their quest to give the packed auditorium their money’s worth.

Ivorian great, Freddy Meiway, a special guest on the night, stunned the audience, including Amakye Dede with his rendition of Be Bre Be. Amakye even danced in his seat to Freddy Meiway's rendition of his song.

He wowed the audience with his smash hit Zoblazo, and the evergreen Miss Lolo which he dedicated to the ladies. A lady joined him on stage and Meiway serenaded her breasts to the ecstasy of the audience.

A documentary about Amakye Dede - his early life and career was played. It came to light that aside music, he was also an award-winning farmer.

After that documentary, the Iron Boy was presented with a gold-plated Legacy and Legacy Ball (LAL) plaque and a citation from the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA).

The citation was presented by hi-life great Ben Brako who said that Amakye Dede has truly played a huge role in the Ghanaian music industry and has also influenced hundreds of Ghanaian musicians. "Thank you for the role you have played in the Ghanaian music industry," he added.

MC for the night, Kwame Sefa Kaye presented him with a medal and said, "You are truly a living music legend." Amakye Dede was also presented with $20,000.

After a brief interlude, Amakye Dede took to the stage to give off what he is best known for. Dressed in camouflage, he dazzled with well known tunes such as To Be a Man, Sang ɔdɔ ɛnyɛ mo saa, ɔdɔ da babi as he jogged around and played air guitar with two female dancers behind him and the crowd singing along loudly, including the second MC for the night Akuma Mama Zimbe.

He was not done yet. He capped a splendid night with Broken Promise, Odo nti na mesu, and ɔdɔ men su - midway through that song, he gave a shout out thanking his wife Mary, who wore broad smiles.

Bradez Releases Another Smash Hit Single ‘Wo Se Sen’

With a successful release of ‘Medo Me Ghana’, which is gaining much exposure on both local and international platforms, one of the most inspirational and skillful rap group in Ghana by the name of Bradez releases another hit single titled ‘Wo Se Sen,’ come 16st september, 2012 on the internet, various radio stations in Ghana and on the MTN radio play; shortcode: 1303.

‘Wo Se Sen’, they say, is a fusion of Afro beat and European pop to which has been the first of its kind in the musical history of Ghana. Speaking on this, they revealed that the “fusion lies in the rhythm and the percussion” of which they (Bradez) claim to have been the brain behind it.

In response to how the content of the music reveals the fusion, Bradez stated that it is specially delivered in the tones of the keyboard as well as employment of auto tune and choral which show traces of European music. However, the drum pattern gives a flavor of Afro beat.

To Bradez, which is made up of two blood brothers by the names of Kwaku Nsiah- Boamah (Flow King-Stone) and Kwaku Nsiah Amankwah (Kunta Kinte), ‘Wo Se Sen,’ like any other good music should revive happiness and joy in the life of one who is in a state of misery. It should also relieve every listener of the stresses of daily activities; the purpose for which they composed the mellifluous song.

With an up-tempo beat, the group says it believes without any doubt that Azonto enthusiasts can dance to ‘Wo Se Sen’, and that it should be a hit in the music industry even across Ghana. ‘Wo Se Sen’ was produced by Danny Weezy, and however mixed and mastered by Pee Wezel.

MUSIGA LAUNCHED FIRST
EDITION OF GHANA MUSIC WEEK
On Friday September 14th 2012, the Musicians Union of Ghana launched the first ever Ghana Music Week at the Coconut Grove Regency Hotel in Accra. The actual festival will be celebrated at the National Theater from October 15 to 21st 2012.
The launch, which attracted young and old Ghanaian musicians, some MUSIGA regional Executives, the media, various stakeholders and lovers of the industry, was chaired by Honorable Mike Gizo, an ex-Minister of State. In his welcome address, the Chairman acknowledged that he was honored to have been called upon to chair the launch of the first ever-Ghanaian musical festival of this magnitude.
Also present at the launch were Honorable Fritz Baffour, the Minister for Information and Baba Jamal, a Deputy Minister for Tourism; both officially endorsing the celebration and reiterating Government’s recognition of the upcoming Celebration.
“We hope that as MUSIGA fine-tunes activities of the celebration, it would consider the need to use this festival to ensure our artistic products are better packaged and branded to meet international standards”. He then cited the Azonto Dance as a potential showbiz export”

Just after expressing his admiration for the Azonto fever, Lexis Bill, the MCs of the event put Baba Jamal on the spot, and ensured the deputy Minister danced Azonto for about 3-minutes before taking his seat.  After his brief speech and before he officially launched GMW 2012 Programme, Honorable Fritz Baffour predictably tested his artistic ‘animal’ by calling upon the 2nd Vice President of MUSIGA, Bessa Simon, to support him on keyboards as the Minister treated the audience to a performance of blues, aptly backed by the band for the night.
Mrs. Diana Hopeson, the immediate past President of MUSIGA officially out-doored the logo for Ghana Music Week 2012. The Launch experienced performances by AB Crentsil, Steve Bedi, Pat Thomas, Kesse, Paulina Oduro, Racquel and Asabea Cropper.

In a speech read on behalf of the President of the Musicians Union of Ghana, Bice “Obour” Osei Kuffour, who was on assignment in the U.S. at the time, the 2nd Vice President of MUSIGA, Bessa Simons stated the main objective of the Ghana Music Week Celebration as: creating the industry’s biggest platform to bring together and encourage participation of artistes, stakeholders, media and policy makers.

He said: “GMW will seek to recognize, promote and underscore the importance and value of all Ghanaian music forms and foster and promote a lifelong interest in music as a basic human experience and a right within cultural expressions”.
An Administrator of MUSIGA, Ahuma Ocansey walked the gathered through the main activities of the October 15-21st celebration. He enumerated activities such as Sales & Exhibition (all week), Seminars, Symposiums and Workshops for Industry members, including training managers of musicians and their services”.

“A major attraction”, he noted, “will be the Stakeholders Dialogue, where best brain in the industry will join with invited professionals from across the world to discuss ways of improving the standard of the industry”.
Mr. Ocansey, said, “According to the Event Diary, there will be a National Music Essay Contest and Photo Bar & Exhibition. GMW will also be an avenue where musicians can launch their new products. He said, the Terrace on the third floor of the National Theater would be the Food & Chill Zone Area, which will include bars, and a Niteclub operating throughout the week.

Mr. Ahuma Ocansey ended by revealing that, “two major musical concerts are scheduled on October 19 (Highlife Fiesta) and Saturday, October 20th, 201- The All-Star Concert featuring the first MUSIGA Honours.
