An Overview of Ghana Music Week Celebrations
The Musicians Union of Ghana in
partnership with the Ministries of Chieftaincy and Culture, Information and
Tourism will be presenting the first ever Ghana Music Week Celebrations from
the 15th of October to the 21st of October at the National Theater in Accra. It
was launched on the 14th of September 2012 at the Coconut Groove Regency Hotel.
Honorable Mike Gizo with
Honorable Fritz Baffour doing the actual launch chaired the launch. Ex MUSIGA
President, Diana Hopeson revealed the logo for the GMW. Also present at the
launch was Honorable Baba Jamal and a host of Musicians.
The highlights of the celebration
include an essay competition, seminars and symposiums on different musical
genres, a highlife concert and an All Star Music Night. It is expected that
many artists, music producers, managers, studio owners and all stakeholders in
the music industry will meet to share ideas and to throw more insight into
their activities.
The Ghana Music week will seek to
achieve certain goals and aims. Among these will be to create the industry’s
biggest platform to bring together and encourage participation of artistes,
stakeholders and the media. It will also be for the recognition and promotion
of the importance and value of all Ghanaian music forms. This festival will
help in connecting African and global markets, to effectively use local labor,
talent and materials and to evaluate and reflect on musical achievements and
creativity in a constructively and educationally focused way.
The GMW 2012 will serve as the
cornerstone for the institutionalizing of a festival with the potential to bring
in more tourists during the season. Eventually, this will become an annual
affair with anticipation among patrons. It will also serve as a platform for
the release of new material by local and international acts.
The celebration of the first ever
Ghana Music Week will not be able to stand without due support from the various
media houses and from sponsors and patrons. The celebration is close yet with
the careful planning underway, it will be a celebration worth the while.
