Ashley Cole Injury
Hits England
COLE is set to pull out of the
England squad with an ankle injury.
The
Chelsea defender picked up the knock in the Blues' UEFA Super Cup defeat to
Atletico Madrid on Friday. And he is a major doubt for the Three Lions’ World
Cup qualifiers with Moldova and Ukraine. Roy Hodgson’s men travel to face
Moldova in Chisinau on Friday before playing Ukraine at Wembley on Tuesday. He
is expected to meet up with the England camp on Monday afternoon but will meet
physios to discuss his injury. Leighton Baines would be Cole’s natural
replacement at left-back in the England starting XI. And his fellow Chelsea
team-mate Ryan Bertrand could also step in after impressing for Team GB at the
Olympics. Cole, 31, is currently on 98 caps for his country and would have
reached his century had he featured in the double-header.
Meanwhile, Manchester City
midfielder Jack Rodwell has pulled out of England Under-21s squad to face
Azerbaijan on Thursday. The midfielder picked up a knock on his knee in the 3-1
win over QPR on Saturday.
